If you are considering graduate school, it’s important to know that not all graduate programs are created equal.
Depending on your Why, your ideal learning style, and your career goals, some mindful research will help you determine if this is a worthwhile investment. When selecting a program, I always recommend exploring the following:
Modality
In-person, virtual, hybrid - there are all types of programs for all types of learners. Think about how you learn best and what will fit your current season of life. Now that I am working in graduate recruitment, I’ve seen that even just the term “online program” can mean a wide variety of things.
Faculty
Look up who is teaching in the program. What are their research interests? Do they have connections in your industry? It is common to reach out during the application process to connect with them and get a sense of their teaching style.
Alumni Network
You are not just choosing the degree and curriculum, but also investing in your future network of colleagues and mentors. Ask the admissions team to connect you with program alumni who can tell you about how their program has impacted them beyond graduation.
Looking back on my own graduate school experience, I was grateful to find an in-person program with some of the best researchers and practitioners in my field and an extensive national professional network. It was an excellent match for my learning style, season of life, and professional goals. I not only made good friends - I also seeded an incredible network of thought-partners who I have reached out to at different points in my career. Whether I was evaluating a next career step, needed input on a work project, or just wanted to level-set with someone outside my institution, my cohort has continued to be a source of professional support. So if you are wondering if a graduate degree is in your future, set aside some time to go beyond a quick Google search, and really explore the program options.
